You have probably heard of a ketogenic diet. This is the diet that today’s stars follow to keep their physique in top shape condition. With a ketogenic diet, you eat a maximum of 25 grams of carbohydrates per day. By reducing carbohydrates, your body switches to fat as a combustion source. In addition, ketones are released. Ketones are produced in the liver and ensure that your body gets energy from fats. This melts your fat away and you lose the excess kilos that you always wanted to get rid of!
Measuring Ketones in your blood
An essential part of the ketogenic diet is ketosis. If you are in ketosis, the ketone level in the blood rises. As you continue to follow the diet, the body uses more fat with ketones as an energy source. The number of ketones in the blood can be measured with a special ketone meter. This is useful, because it will tell you whether you are applying the diet in the right way. Also, it helps you with keeping control of your ketone levels. The ketones are measured by piercing the finger. You are in ketosis when the ketone content is between 0.5 and 3.0 mmol / L.

Measuring ketones through urine
Another way to measure the ketone content is with a ketostrip and a small sample of urine. This strip, when held in the urine, discolors when you are in ketosis. The strip measures the number of ketones in the urine. It is a quick and easy way to check at home if you are in ketosis. If you are in ketosis, the strip will discolor. On the side of the bottle you can see to what extent ketones are present in the urine. In general, the darker the discoloration, the more ketones are present in the urine. Pay attention! This method is inexpensive, but not always reliable. You will never know exactly how many ketones your body has at that moment and that can be dangerous.
Ketones in your breath
If you are just starting a diet that affects your ketosis, it is possible that your breath will smell differently. Now you might eat some more fish than before which could create a certain odor, mening that the smell of your breath is different. However, more likely it is due to the production of ketones. Because there are more ketones in your body, they also leave your body in a larger amount. Part of it leaves your body through the breath, which explains your breath smelling different from what it normally does. One person thinks it is a fruity odor while the other considers it more chemical.
It is actually a sign that you are in ketosis. It is not dangerous but it is part of the process of ketosis. You can reduce bad breath by taking sugar-free chewing gum and drinking more water. Ketones in the breath can be measured with a ketone meter, but these are not readily available and quite pricey. Ketones in the breath can be measured with a breath analyses although this is less accurate than when you do a blood test. In this measurement acetone is measured, which is one of the three1 ketones during ketosis.
Ketones and calories
When you are in ketosis, the body uses the ketones as fuel. The muscle mass is not used for energy. A gram of ketones provides 7 calories of energy. This is less compared to the fat where it comes from. Fats provide 9 calories per gram. However, it is more than the calories from carbohydrates. Carbohydrates provide 4 calories per gram. Ketones that are not used leave the body through the urine. They are therefore not converted to fats.
